WordPress Dashboard UI Idea Update

The UI example has been updated to support Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8. Another improvement is the unified HTML/CSS template for the list-type content inside widgets. For example, try dragging the Latest Comments widget from the action column (right side) to the content area (left side column) and see what happens with the widget’s content.

CSS only drop-down menu with fully clickable link area

Variable width drop-down menu that works in Internet Explorer 6 (CSS only)

Aside from that, I think I have managed to create the first ever CSS only drop-down menu (that works also in IE6) with the second level links expanding to the total width of that menu. If you are interested, see the source.

Idea for a WordPress Dashboard Layout & Design

Update: this mock-up has now been turned into a fully functional interface.

In the previous post I stated that the proposed vertical navigation bar for WordPress 2.7 Dashboard is not the best solution for the purpose that it is going to be used for. And just because there should be a reason why most of the desktop applications have their main navigation placed at the top as a drop-down menu, right.

Tabbed Widgets Now Better than Ever

Tabbed Widgets plugin for WordPress has been updated to include most of the features that users of the plugin have requested since it was first released. Here is a quick list of all the improvements that are available in version 0.71:

  • An “invisible” sidebar or widgetized area is added to the list of the available sidebars automatically. Now you can easily prepare and configure the widgets that you want to use inside a tabbed interface. Previously you would have to manually edit template.php of your theme, but now the plugin does it for you and for every theme.
  • List of widgets includes also their titles The drop-down list of widgets that are available for placement inside a tabbed interface now includes titles of the widgets which makes it possible to distinguish between multiple text widgets, for example. Previously you could end up having multiple text and rss widgets without any way of determining which is which.
  • Make any of the tabs open by default. Previously you could choose only a random or a hardcoded “start” tab.
  • The horizontal tabs are now as smart as the accordion ones — the automatic rotation stops when a reader hovers it.
  • Improved performance and significantly reduced database calls.

Notice: Version 0.7 has a bug which somehow makes some posts under ‘Edit’section of WordPress dashboard to disappear. This is now fixed in 0.71.
