Update: there is a new version of the UX update available.
For the next release of the Widget Context plugin I have two goals — simplified user interface and code clean-up to eliminate PHP notices.
However, due to the complex logic of combined ‘show’ and ‘hide’ visibility rules, I haven’t yet settled on the final layout and naming of various buttons and labels. Therefore, it would be really great if you could take a look at this video and leave your feedback in the comments. There is also a working demo of the UI.
Looks pretty good.
One idea regarding the “include/exclude” problem would be to have a big fat switch:
“Show this widget everywhere, except here:”
OR
“Show this widget here:”
and after that, show the UI in the video.

Thanks for the suggestion, scribu! I have thought about this ‘show and hide dilemma’ really hard because I don’t know what most of the users assume is the default state of the plugin — does it hide all widgets or show them; can you mix ‘show’ and ‘hide’ rules? Or should one even mix them?
Since releasing this UX concept I have thought of an improvement which I’ll publish very soon. And this should really do it for everyone :)
I think mixing ‘show’ and ‘hide’ rules is really confusing for everybody and therefore shouldn’t be encouraged.
Anyway, I’m curious what you came up with. :)
I love this plugin as it provides to wordpress the closest functionality to what exists in drupal for visibility settings.
Will support for custom post types will be included in this new release, i.e. for each registered post type can you show/hide by that post type alone, and also have options show/hide on the custom post type archive index pages as well?
Definitely, Rob! It will support custom post types, taxonomies and their index pages.
Thats great news, my only other suggest/request might be for a custom php rule option, i.e. show on pages where some custom php code returns true.

Thanks for the suggestoin, Rob! I am planning on adding a simple filter that you can use (in
functions.php) to add a custom “predefined” location to the drop-down.I think the plugin sounds great. It’s really no different than conditional statements in some other plugins, so “show” and “hide” should not be a problem for most users.
I’m more concerned with no errors and the security of the plugin.
RonBme, what do you mean by “no errors and the security”. Are you talking about the current version of Widget Context or this demo?
I was referring to the next version of Widget Context. As WordPress is the #1 target of hackers, I’m interested in it being secure from hackers.
I think this could be one of the most useful WordPress plugins.
